Carl von Czoernig Czernhausen
“How much I liked Gorizia, «The Austrian Nice»! During the Empire I dedicated myself to the administrative statistics; I realised that it was much more than just a collector of numbers and it has become an essential tool to understand the economic and social life of the territories!”
Dear visitor, I am the Count Carl von Czoernig. You find me right here because in 1866, after a long political career, I decided to retire to private life and I chose Gorizia as my refuge. I knew very well the Gorizia reality, since I had long worked in Trieste. I chose this city because I lwas really charmed by its natural beauty, and by its lifestyle, so I dedicated to the city a book, written between 1867 and 1873, entitled "Gorizia, The Austrian Nice". I also composed the work "The territory of Gorizia and Gradisca", a historical-statistical text that still contains the most complete history of the city of Gorizia. Until that time, of course. Many scholars today are still grateful for my excellent historical studies!
