Viatori Garden

The garden was created in the 1960s when professor Luciano Viatori, passionate about botany and horticulture, bought a hill at the foot of Gorizia, which has wonderful views over the city.

Professor Viatori cleaned the uncultivated land with perseverance, passion and determination, strengthening the steep and unstable parts, creating reinforcing works, paths, steps and small wooden bridges. He created a large garden pond from a bomb crater. And he devised and built an original irrigation system based on gravity fed water-flows. It still works.

The garden harmoniously connects three terraces. You can admire hundreds of rhododendrons, azaleas, lilies, hortensias, spireas, viburnums, peonies, climbing roses, plum and apple trees, as well as a hundred deciduous magnolias that bloom from March to June.

After Luciano Viatori’s death in February 2014, following his will, the Garden was donated to the foundation Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia. It is committed to preserve and enhance this precious garden for the community, keeping alive the project and the teachings of the man who created it.
