Graziadio Isaia Ascoli

I was born into a Jewish family. Thanks to my internationally recognized studies on glottology, I have been the first professor of comparative linguistics in Italy. I have been senator of the Kingdom. I created the term Venezia Giulia.

Dear visitor, I have an important Jewish name: Graziadio Isaia Ascoli. My birthplace is located at nr. 1 in the street named after me; you can recognize it by the plate. Since I grew up in a city permeated with linguistic diversity, I dedicated myself to linguistics (the scientific study of languages). This science excited me so deeply that I published numerous essays and scholarly articles in the most renowned Italian and European magazines. I founded the magazine "Italian Linguistics Archive" and I am still remembered by the Italian Philological Society, that bears my name. Teaching played an important part in my life, too; for 25 years I was a professor at the Scientific-Literary Academy in Milan, that became my second city. Gorizia also remembers me with a bust at the Public Gardens.
