Western ramparts

Going up the road, blocked on one side by ramparts and on the other by the Castle building, we see on the left a large window overlooking the inner part of one the Venetian towers of the Castle, excellent positions for anti-aircraft machine guns.

After the Austrians came back in October 1917, the Emperor Charles of Habsburg came many times to Gorizia and went to the Castle. There are images showing him at the foot of the western ramparts with military commanders, and also with his courtiers and wife, the Emperor and Queen Zita.
