Western Bastions

Walking up the hill, closed on one side by the bastions and on the other by the Castle building, you come across, on the left, a large window that looks inside one of the castle's Venetian towers.

During the war, excellent anti-aircraft machine gun emplacements were located here. After the Austrians returned in October 1917, Emperor Charles of Habsburg visited Gorizia several times, climbing up to the Castle. The image depicting him at the foot of the western bastions dates back to November 19th, accompanied not only by military commanders but also by part of his court and his wife, Empress and Queen Zita.
