Werdenberg Palace – Isonzo State Library

The building, renovated around the mid-17th century by Count Giovanni Battista Verda de Verdenberg to transform it into a boarding school for nobles intending to undertake an ecclesiastical career, continued to function as a Jesuit seminary until 1773.

It later served as an imperial college, a lyceum, and then, from the mid-19th century, an imperial-royal state gymnasium (Staatsgymnasium). Today it houses the Isontina State Library, which preserves a rich collection of books, including the original collections of the Jesuit college as well as those of the Civic Library, founded in 1888.

The Palace, which underwent a comprehensive restoration between 1988 and 1995, maintains its seventeenth-century structure. Inside, one can still admire the courtyard with loggias and the entrance staircase, decorated on the ceiling with stucco motifs dating back to before 1705.

Inside, in the spaces accessible to the public, you can also admire works by contemporary local artists, many of which were donated following exhibitions held at the Mario di Iorio Art Gallery, which is located in the Library.
