Borgo Castello – Great War
In the early twentieth century, the urban center on the Castle hill was a district with distinctly medieval characteristics, picturesque and lively, but somewhat marginalized from the city.
During the war, the ancient buildings huddled together along the stretch of road beyond the small church of Santo Spirito were fortunately spared the severe damage that would have otherwise resulted in the demolition of much of the Borgo. Among these are the Dornberg and Tasso houses, which today house the Provincial Museums of Borgo Castello. Here, next to the Museum of Fashion and Applied Arts, is the Museum of the Great War, which displays objects and documents from the Museum of War and Redemption, inaugurated in 1938 and previously housed in Palazzo Attems Petzenstein. In addition to a room dedicated to General Armando Diaz, the exhibition includes a life-size reconstruction of a trench and a diorama of a battlefield.
