Viatori Park / Azalea Garden
The beautiful Azalea Garden, lovingly created over many years by Professor Luciano Viatori, who later donated it to the city, offers the opportunity for a romantic stroll, hand in hand with our "other half of the sky." Nestled on a hill overlooking the city from the right bank of the Isonzo River, it offers a splendid view of Gorizia with its castle, the Isonzo River, the Karst Plateau, and the Prealps.
Consisting of three levels, it features, arranged in an English landscape style, a vast array of diverse botanical species, from rhododendrons to hydrangeas, from daffodils to heather bushes, and countless azaleas. An interesting fact: the small water lily pond was created inside a crater created by a bomb explosion during the Great War, and is still fed by an ingenious hydraulic gravity system, designed and built by Professor Viatori himself.
