Turning right, you enter Via Oberdan, once called Via della Caserma due to the presence, on the corner with Piazza Vittoria, of the ancient Jesuit convent complex which, after the suppression of the order, was confiscated by the imperial treasury and transformed into barracks.

It never had its own name, so it was known as the "casermone" or Travnik-Kaserme, from the ancient Slovenian name for the square, meaning "meadow." In the 19th century, it housed the 47th "Count Beck" infantry regiment. During the war, it housed several imperial units, and at the end of October 1918, it was occupied by troops from the 2nd Gebirschützen Regiment, composed primarily of Slovenians, sent from Codroipo to Gorizia on the orders of the Slovenian National Committee to maintain public order. It was later taken over by the 3rd Alpine Regiment. It was demolished in 1938 as part of an urban renewal project linked to the opening of the current Via Roma. The INPS building now stands in its place.
