Via Diaz – Alvarez Palace and Evangelical Church
On the opposite side of the intersection is Via Diaz, once Via Alvarez, the city's oldest avenue. On the left stands Palazzo Alvarez, originally the residence of a wealthy Spaniard who, upon his death in 1753, turned it into an orphanage.
In 1786, the management of the complex was entrusted to the Fatebenefratelli, who turned it into a hospital. During the war, it was used for both civilians and military personnel.
Opposite lies the park of the Evangelical Church, built in 1863 by the Ritter family, wealthy entrepreneurs of German origin. During the war, the building was repeatedly hit by bombs due to the presence of the bell tower, which served as an artillery observation post.
