Via Cocevia: the ancient Jewish quarter

Located at the foot of the castle, it is the first street where the Jews of Gorizia resided, around 1648.

Even then, in fact—although the Israelites also lived in other areas of the city—the desire for them all to settle in one place began to grow, given that they shared the same rituals and principles. In any case, the establishment of the actual ghetto was not long in coming: in 1696, a provision was issued guaranteeing its implementation, while the permanent relocation of Jewish families took place in the following two years.

On March 12, 1698, a total of 16 houses located in the San Giovanni district were sold and rented: furthermore, it was established that the ghetto would be closed by two gates.
