Trgovski Dom – 20th century architecture
The seat of a bank but, in fact and primarily, the building of the Slovenian community of the Gorizia area, it was designed by the architect Max Fabiani in 1903.

Built between 1903 and 1905 based on a design by Max Fabiani, the Trgovski Dom is a profoundly innovative example for the central area of the city both for its complex articulation of functions and for the period of its construction.
With a plot of approximately 900 square meters at his disposal, Fabiani efficiently organized the distribution of the various functions requested by the client, which included various commercial enterprises, cultural, and sports organizations. Until the First World War, the community was very active: with its commercial activities and offices, the Trgovski Dom represented the expression of the Slovenian presence. Seized from the community during the Fascist era and partially damaged in a fire in 1927, it became the Casa del Fascio (House of the Fascist Party), then, from May 1945 to November 1946, the Casa del Popolo (People's House), and finally the seat of the State Property Office. The idea of a multipurpose building was in itself highly avant-garde for its time, and its influence would later lead to the design of the Urania, a public institute and astronomical observatory located in Vienna, in 1910.
