Trgovski Dom

Turning right into Via Petrarca and walking alongside the Public Garden, you come across the Trgovski Dom, which overlooks the corner with Corso Verdi, the ancient Via Giardino.

The building, constructed between 1903 and 1905, is one of the major works of Gorizia architect Max Fabiani, a leading figure of the Viennese Secession and Rationalism. It was commissioned by the consortium of the Banca Commerciale Industriale and the Cassa Popolare dei Prestiti. It soon became known as the "house of the Slovenians," partly due to the associations that operated there in the adjacent theater on Via Petrarca. It was hit by the Italians during the bombing of November 18, 1915. The fire raged all day, severely testing the firefighters.
