The houses of the Jewish ghetto

What was once the main street of the ghetto today largely retains its original appearance.

Characterized by tall houses, beautiful stone frames around gates, doors, and windows, and characteristic wrought-iron balconies. On some doorposts, you can still see the rectangular hole for the mezuzah: a container containing a parchment scroll with a biblical verse, a characteristic of the homes of observant Jews. Some even retain traces of the construction date, such as the one at number 16/B, which displays the year "1808" on a wrought-iron bezel, or the one at number 4, which bears the numbers "5564," corresponding, according to the Jewish calendar, to the year 1804. Inside, the safe of the Jona company is still kept, the wealth of which gave rise to the popular saying "Do you think I have Jona's safe?"
