…from the city's most important square, known since 1918 as Victory Square (formerly Piazza Grande and also Travnik – from the Slovenian: Prato), dominated by the majesty of the church of St. Ignatius, built by the Society of Jesus between 1654 and 1747.

The imposing façade features two bell towers surmounted by bronze “onion domes,” typical of Central Europe, with large clocks oriented toward the cardinal points and visible from much of the city.

Taking Via Mameli, formerly Via delle Scuole, to the right of Sant'Ignazio, you briefly pass the Werdenberg Palace, once the seat of the first city seminary (1629-1773), then of the Staatsgymnasium from 1814 to 1915, and now of the prestigious Isontina State Library, a treasure chest of over 400,000 precious volumes.
