The clock in Piazza Cesare Battisti
Crossing the Garden, which over time has increasingly become a small memorial dedicated to various illustrious historical figures from Gorizia, leads us towards what is now Piazza Cesare Battisti, formerly Piazza del Fieno and, later, Piazza della Ginnastica, dominated by the imposing structure of Palazzo Mels, later the Sudbahn Hotel, and now the headquarters of the Pozzuolo del Friuli Cavalry Brigade Command.
In its central position, it features a bronze monument dedicated to the memory of gold medalist Enrico Toti, while at the opposite end, on the corner of Via Rismondo, prominently displayed against the building of the Unione Ginnastica Goriziana, is a beautiful two-faced clock, donated to the city by the Gorizia-based De Braunizer family. Until the 1980s, it stood in Piazza della Vittoria, above the historic Francesco De Braunizer goldsmith's shop, and was moved there after the business closed.
Founded in 1868 under the name of Società di Ginnastica, Scherma e Canto (Gymnastics, Fencing and Singing Society), the sporting and cultural association is one of the city's longest-standing and most renowned institutions and has represented an essential point of reference in the city's sporting and other spheres for almost a century and a half.
