Statue of the philosopher Karl Michelstaedter

Placed in this square on November 3, 2010, at the initiative of the Municipality of Gorizia as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the death of the philosopher from Gorizia, the life-size bronze statue was created by the prestigious Bonvicini Foundry of Verona.

The image of Carlo Michelstaedter recalls the photograph taken in 1907 in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, where he was immortalized together with his friend Gaetano Chiavacci.

Philosopher, poet, and author of graphic and pictorial works, Michelstaedter (1887-1910) was a sensitive and restless young man who, after attending the Imperial-Royal State Gymnasium in Gorizia, chose to continue his studies in literature and philosophy in Florence. Immediately after completing his thesis, "Persuasion and Rhetoric," which is today considered one of the key texts of twentieth-century thought, on October 17, 1910, Carlo took his own life with a pistol shot. The statue, a pilgrimage destination for the many admirers of this extraordinary figure, is the city of Gorizia's homage to one of its most illustrious figures.
