Provincial Captain's Palace
On foot the emperor entered the Palace of the Provincial Captain, which was reserved for him as a residence.
Franz Joseph took his seat on the canopied throne that had been set up in the courtyard and was visible from the square. After the provincial representatives paid homage, the Provincial Captain presented the monarch with a gold commemorative medal, depicting the last Count of Gorizia, Leonardo, on one side, and Emperor Maximilian I on the other.
The sovereign then delivered his speech of thanks in German, focusing on the county's loyalty and attachment to the House of Habsburg. After a quick breakfast, the afternoon began with a series of audiences, first with the clergy, then with high-ranking representatives of the army, and finally with various delegations from the civil administration.
