Piazza Sant'Antonio – the path of time

Going briefly up Via Colobini and then turning left to go back up Via Rabatta, we come directly into the current Piazza Sant'Antonio, named after the ancient convent of the Friars Minor, which overlooks the square, with what remains of the elegant cloister.

At the opposite end of the square stands the entrance to the 13th-century Schoenhaus Palace, a former hunting lodge of the Counts of Gorizia. During the 16th century, it passed into the hands of the illustrious Lantieri family, who still reside there. On the left side of Piazza S. Antonio is the 16th-century Strassoldo Palace, which today houses one of the city's most prestigious hotels. It was one of the Gorizia residences of the last king of France, Charles X of Bourbon, who lived here in exile, and his family. The western end of the square, through the eponymous gate located at the beginning of Strada di Vienna (now Via Alviano), was once the main entrance to the city.
