Palazzo Lantieri – The Bourbons

The beautiful palace of the Lantieri counts hosted the French royals exiled in Gorizia on several occasions.

Like the city's other prominent families, the Lantieris regularly frequented the Bourbon residence at Palazzo Strassoldo. In her elegant palace, which had been known as the "Schonhaus" (beautiful house) since its construction, Countess Elena Lantieri had organized a grand party in 1838 to celebrate the eighteenth birthday of Henri, Count of Chambord, the last Bourbon pretender to the French throne, under the name of Henry V. Born seven months after the death of his father, Charles Ferdinand de Berry, who was assassinated in 1820 by an anti-monarchist fanatic, he had been nicknamed the "miracle child." In 1846, he had married Maria Teresa of Habsburg Este, who, after being widowed in 1883, settled in Palazzo Lantieri, where she died a few years later in 1886. A plaque, mounted above the building's entrance steps, commemorates the presence of this illustrious guest.
