The Church of the Sacred Heart is a building that has had multiple design fathers due to the lack of clarity of the client and the lack of funds and contributions for its construction.

Max Fabiani (Cobidil San Gregorio 1865 – Gorizia 1962)

Max Fabiani was born near San Daniele del Carso in 1865. His studies spanned from Ljubljana to Vienna, where he graduated in Architecture in 1892. After the Great War, he was called to Gorizia to oversee the city's reconstruction plan. During this experience, Fabiani oversaw numerous interventions and new projects, including the design of the Church of the Sacred Heart, completed in June 1938. Having had several architects, the church's first contribution was Antonio Lasciac's design dating back to 1891. Concluding a complex and eventful history, in 1934 Max Fabiani took on his fourth and final project, and the church was officially consecrated in 1937. The façade is structured along horizontal and vertical lines interrupted by the roundness of the central windows, which highlight the orthogonal composition of the grid that already characterizes the architectural ensemble. Also on the façade, the three salients are located at the three naves and their corresponding entrances and are framed by massive marble buttresses. The contrast of brick and marble breaks up the geometric rigour of the façade, bringing lightness to the overall impression. This style is also recognizable in other works designed by Max Fabiani, including the Parish Church of Šempeter and the Church of San Lorenzo.
