Leopoldina Gate
Access to the Borgo is through the so-called “Leopoldina” gate.
Part of the city walls constructed in several phases from the early 16th to the 18th century, it was built in 1660 to honor the presence of Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg during his visit to Gorizia. On July 17, 1915, along the climb to the Castle, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Körner de Sigmaringen was struck in the head by shrapnel. He was the commander of the divisional artillery deployed to defend the Gorizia bridgehead. A plaque commemorating him was placed in the passageway of the Porta Leopoldina, replaced in 1938 with the current one. Fortunately, the gate was spared from the bombing, while the houses that lined the road on the right at the entrance to the village were later completely demolished.
