Internal courtyard – Court of the Lanzi

The climb leads to the entrance gate of the Castle, where in August 1916, despite the arrival of the Italians, the double-headed eagle of the Habsburgs was still visible, having survived the numerous Italian grenades that exploded near the wall.

The internal courtyard overlooked the gate of the barracks that, at the outbreak of war in 1914, housed the 13th battalion of the Austrian Territorial Militia . To the left of the courtyard is the ancient entrance to the manor, the so-called " Salcano Gate ." Bricked up for centuries, it was brought to light during the 10th Battle of the Isonzo, when Austro-Hungarian artillery struck the Italian observation post located a little higher up, at a point from which the entire theatre of operations could be seen.
