Hotel de la Poste
The final chapter of the Bourbon presence in Gorizia took place in this building in the city centre, which today houses some of the municipal offices.
In 1883, the death of the Count of Chambord, Henry V, the last descendant of the family, reopened the question of the possible succession to the throne of France. For his solemn funeral, the entire French monarchist world gathered in Gorizia, and the city became the site of a heated debate between those who supported the Bourbon line of Parma and Spain, also supported by Henry's widow, and those who supported a liberal monarchy with Louis-Philippe of Orleans, Henry's cousin but also a descendant of the man who had actually facilitated the fall of the Bourbons. The Orléanists, whose position ultimately prevailed, had gathered at the Hôtel de la Poste, on Via del Teatro, now Via Garibaldi. Despite countless renovations and changes in use, the plaque inside still stands, commemorating that it was precisely on this site that the French royalists "proclaimed the new pretender to the throne of France."
