The Gorizia philosopher Carlo Michelstaedter was born in this building and spent his childhood and adolescence here with his family.

In 1905, he moved to Florence, where he had decided to pursue university studies, returning home only for summer and winter holidays. As his sister Paula recounted several years later, Carlo spent his final days in this house, "subsisting mainly on fruit, milk, and black coffee—he slept on the floor without a mattress," and devoting himself day and night to the final draft of his thesis, "Persuasion and Rhetoric." Here, he was found by his cousin Emilio Michelstaedter after committing the tragic act that ended his life on October 17, 1910.

The house was completely rebuilt after being heavily damaged by a grenade during the war. The inscription on the facade, commemorating the birth and death of Carlo Michelstaedter, was placed in 1960 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the young thinker from Gorizia's death.
