Sigismondo Attems

I held important positions in the County administration, but my greatest passions were history and poetry, even founding a literary academy. I shared my knowledge with renowned scholars in my beautiful city palace.

 

I am the eldest son of Gianfrancesco and Elisabetta Coronini Cronberg. I attended the Jesuit college in Gorizia, the College of Nobles in Modena, and completed my law studies in Salzburg. I was appointed County Lieutenant, and after Maria Theresa's public administration reforms, I served as the highest ranking justice official in the County of Gorizia. I have always been interested in history and poetry—I even wrote treatises and poems—and I was in contact with many scholars, such as Bernardo de Rubeis and Pietro Metastasio. To foster and promote culture, I founded the Accademia dei Filomeleti, whose members, men of letters and scientists of the time, gathered in my townhouse, which I renovated and expanded. For my family, I also built a country villa in Piedimonte/Podgora, which I tastefully furnished, making it worthy of even the most illustrious guests.
