Dominic Ponzi

This palace is a small museum: the frescoes by Cadorin and Del Neri, the mosaic by Matilde Festa Piacentini, a painting by Tato, a painting by Pericle Gentili and my monument to the fallen in the Great War.

 

I'm the sculptor Domenico Ponzi. I started sculpting when I was almost forty (born in 1891, passed away in 1973), but I'd say I've done well, and if you stop by the post offices in Grosseto and Palermo, you can get an idea.

In Gorizia, my Reclining Infantryman—which completed the war memorial—was melted down during World War II for military purposes. Nothing personal, mind you: another bronze statue, by Napoleone Martinuzzi, depicting Saint Gorizia, also suffered the same fate.
