Carlo Battisti

I lived between two worlds (1882-1977): the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy, suspected of espionage, a soldier in the Great War, and an actor for De Sica. I organized this library as it is today.

Dear reader, you are entering my world of books, cultures, and diverse languages. I was born in Trento in 1882, graduated from Vienna, and my entire life has been marked by teaching and research in the field of linguistics. I directed this library at the end of the Great War, from 1919 to 1925. These were difficult years after my time as a soldier in Siberia. It could be said that I made it an example of modernity, creating new inventories and catalogs and helping it grow.

I wasn't loved; in fact, they considered me an Austrian spy. Then I moved to Florence and devoted myself to teaching at the university and writing essays. In 1952, De Sica chose me for his film "Umberto D." They therefore considered me a star of Italian neorealism. Enter with confidence, here you will find books in many languages and contemporary paintings.
