Another installment of Chiacchiere Goriziane: on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th, the theme will be "Help, help! The French are coming! March 19, 1947.".
Reading the Chronicles of the Ursuline Mothers, one finds oneself immersed in Gorizia, conquered by the French in 1797. Around twenty thousand soldiers and General Bonaparte descended upon the city, wreaking havoc, sacking and plundering it. The Ursuline Mothers, with great courage, faced "the barbarous French," reluctantly hosting officers and common soldiers who emptied the city's food and wine supplies in a matter of hours. There were five successive dominations, all well described in the precious diaries now preserved in the Archives of the Archbishop's Curia.
